Silverio T. Barreras Memorial Scholarships Awarded

MIAMI —  At the passing of her husband, long time teacher and administrator in the Miami Unified School District and graduate of Northern Arizona University, Ramona Barreras established a Memorial Scholarship in Silver’s name at NAU.

This scholarship is available to graduates of Miami High School and preference is given to those students enrolled at NAU with a declared major in Education.  When there are no students in that discipline, other MHS graduates are eligible to apply.

Courtney Blake, majoring in Exercise Science and Michael Mishler who is majoring in Parks & Recreation/Fire Science with a minor in Business were awarded $3,000 each for the school year 2017-2018 following a competitive application process.

Each year Ramona sponsors a golf tournament to add to the principal in the Scholarship Fund.  Support from the community, Miami High School Alumni, retired educators and members of the organizations to which Silver belonged are encouraged to support this memorial.

The golf tournament this year is scheduled for October 28th at the Cobre Valle Country Club as a 3 person Scramble.

Watch the Arizona Silverbelt and Copper Country News for information on registration as the date approaches.

Ramona noted “It is really gratifying to award funds to graduates of the Miami School District where my husband and I taught for so many years.”
